Everyone is looking back on their best birds of 2019, so I thought it would be a good idea to look at a book that looks back a little further: Urban Ornithology: 150 Years of Birds in New York City , by P. The book is divided into three parts: “Introduction,” “Avifaunal Overview,” and “Species Accounts.”

New York City is well known as a city of immigrants so it makes sense that the only lizards living within the five boroughs are immigrants as well. The best bet for finding either species is to get into the proper habitat on a sunny day and to watch for them sunning themselves on rocks or gravel.

The first two chapters make clear that although environmental concerns were a factor, his major reason for doing a big year was personal–his work as a postdoc in research neurobiology was at a crisis point, he needed to change research direction or…do something else.

Hopefully I will see at least that many species in 2014! Checking out Red-breasted Blackbirds at the Aripo Agricultural Research Station. My life Gyrfalcon.

I’d seen nine warbler species, Baltimore Orioles , a brilliant Scarlet Tanager , and what seemed like dozens of catbirds when an odd warbler caught my eye. They also described a solid black cap all the way down to the bird’s eye, whereas the New York bird had a yellow arc over the eye and a contrasting eye line.

Back in the 1980s, it became popular for biologists to consider plant secondary compounds in understanding inter-species relationships and other ecological matters. European Starling in New York City trying to bum a cigarette (photo by Corey, from HERE ) But I digress. The next stage in this research is obvious.
