The Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center in Norristown covers four Pennsylvania counties (including Philadelphia) and takes in over 3000 animals a year. Licensed wildlife rehabilitator and Assistant Director Michele Wellard relayed this story: In the spring a few years back, a man cut down a tree on his property outside Philadelphia.

The mother only returns once maybe twice a day to feed and some species of rabbits like the eastern Cottontail have their babies in the open rather than burrows. 2) If the rabbit is in danger such as from your cat or dog try to release it out of the perimeter. You need to get it to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

What I don’t understand is why animal rights organizations almost completely ignore wildlife. Habitat destruction and degradation is far and away the number one reason why wildlife populations are extirpated or go extinct. Yes, of course it is too bad that so many animals (most often rats, mice and rabbits) have to be killed.

In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. People would often express surprise that I, someone that cared about wildlife conservation, would eat meat.

A wildlife rehabilitator friend, newly licensed, recently called to ask if he could feed a recovering Turkey Vulture anything besides defrosted rodents. My mammal-rehabber friends give me their unfortunates, as well. He then ate a screech owl, a robin, two squirrels, a mourning dove, three chipmunks, and a rabbit.

Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. but that's pretty much it for mammals. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk.

What kid can resist the siren song of bunny rabbits frolicking in the grass? And Desi, being the offspring of two pretty cool people, if I do so say myself, loves chasing him some rabbits. Rabbits practically beg to be chased, with their cuteness and their swiftness and their uncatchability. Why wouldn’t he?
