This spot had to be further investigated! Chipping Sparrow. Since I can’t leave well enough alone, I’ll throw in a photo of a Grasshopper Sparrow that definitely did not visit my Wonder Tree. Plus, Grasshopper Sparrows are unusually beautiful sparrows. What could I do? All in one tree!

Spring Migrants at Bayonne Park

Then a flock of flickers foraging in a field got my attention and I parked and went over to investigate. The flickers flew but a host of sparrows attracted my attention and I gradually made my way up to the area between Park Drive and JFK Boulevard and was amazed at the sheer number of birds.

What could be plainer than the Eurasian Tree Sparrow ? When the animal recovers from the anesthetic, it is given access to a mirror.

Birding Albert Park, Melbourne

House Sparrows thrive in the city, but don’t appear to inhabit the parks and gardens quite as much. Interestingly the Botanical Gardens don’t appear to sustain a population of House Sparrows at all among all the greenery. The constant supply of crumbs around the city must offer enough of a reason to not live in the parks!

Sure, they may arrive well before other bird species and risk getting caught in a cold snap without an ample source of food, but they are willing to investigate new sources. Enterprising birds will see the chickadees and sparrows coming down and realize their might be food there for them.

Birding Cuba, or Observación de aves en Cuba

They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. The Zapata Swamp, Ciénaga de Zapata , is of course known for the three birds that bear it’s name: the Zapata Rail, the Zapata Wren, and the Zapata Sparrow. I took a brief, wobbly, video of the process.
