Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. I remember, several times while motionlessly surveying birds, I found myself being investigated by Striped Field Mice , who would dare to come to sniff me. They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. The Zapata Swamp, Ciénaga de Zapata , is of course known for the three birds that bear it’s name: the Zapata Rail, the Zapata Wren, and the Zapata Sparrow. I took a brief, wobbly, video of the process.

Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. FLAP is the Fatal Light Awareness Program, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and this is how they raise awareness. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. I hoped it was an anomaly.

The templates can be discovered by raising birds in the absence of adult song, and they often sound very little like the normal final product. As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. If the animal then touches or investigates the mark, it is taken as an indication that the animal perceives the reflected image as an image of itself, rather than of another animal. What could be plainer than the Eurasian Tree Sparrow ?
