Baird’s Sparrow by Seagull Steve Julie’s was not a wild bird, well, at least not one that lived outdoors: My Best Bird of the Year, and the 22 preceding, was Charlie, a Chestnut-fronted Macaw I got as a captive-raised fledgling in 1989. This resplendent whopper of a parrot is as charismatic as avian megafauna gets.

A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Life here is experiencing a boon in the face of encroaching human activity, at least in my immediate vicinity. This, as well as all the other images in this post, were all made at home.

Islands, with their high levels of endemism and specialization, are particularly fragile and vulnerable to human activity. Formerly described in 1811 by Johann Matthäus Bechstein, the Cuban Macaw was a primarily red, long-tailed parrot with beautiful orange feathering around the nape and blue feathering on the wings and tail.

Between staying warm/cool, finding food, avoiding predators, migrating thousands of miles every year, finding mates, raising chicks and doing all this at the mercy of the elements, it makes sense that they have more brainpower than just simple instinct to run on. Stylistic variety abounds in the beer world, and it too is on the rise, though this is more an effect of human intervention. The bird is a cartoonish, all-red parrot with a yellow bill. Birders are generally happy when this happens. More birds mean more potential lifers. Artificial selection, if you like.
