My post last week where I defended game hunting as a conservation tool has, unaccountably, encountered a certain amount of push back. Who would have thought that a post defending hunting game in general would have not been universally acclaimed? I will address two of them in the new year, namely, “Is hunting moral at all?”

The idea of Lost Animals was conceived after the publication of Extinct Birds (2001), a 400-page, four-pound book on 75 extinct species. Lost Birds looks at photographic representations of 28 species, 21 of which are birds. Some were taken of birds and mammals in zoos or aviaries, others were taken in the wild, often in remote places.

Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. A more problematic conflict is that fought over what to do with damaging introduced species. It’s only natural.

Granted those birds had a very different outlook on humans than wild owls, but there were times they were stressed and a good program person can read those signs and know when to end a program when the owl needs it. If you have an owl that is oblivious to your presence like this hunting Boreal Owl , you’re doing ok.

Everyone talks about human rights and there exists so many groups that are either governmental or non-governmental who work toward that cause. The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat. The introduction of exotic animals has extirpated and continues to threaten hundreds of species.

Natural areas include Pelham Bay Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Woodlawn Cemetery, New York Botanical Garden, and the Bronx Zoo. The book is divided into three parts: “Introduction,” “Avifaunal Overview,” and “Species Accounts.” Most birders will go straight to the “Species Accounts.” It’s a very mixed chapter.

The Osprey tries another hunt, finally a successful one, while Telia goes deeper into the water and lies down. But, in the next year, 2009, only one human was killed by a tiger, leading to a conclusion that all the tigers in the conflict area (practically, the wider reserve buffer zone) have been wiped out.

Africa has more than its fair share of storks, with 8 of the world’s 19 species gracing the continent. Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. This is another wetland species that nests in sometimes huge colonies atop trees bordering rivers and lakes.

For some reason, even though there are Mandarin Ducks in zoos throughout New York City, this escapee has become an internationally known tourist attraction, even heading the New York Times list of “Five Times the Internet Was Actually Fun in 2018.” In September, Abigail Ruth, a small human, was born and I became a grandmother.
