I didn’t get too far afield this weekend, but enjoyed the impact adding a nut blend to my feeder has had: Red-bellied Woodpeckers look huge next to the usual sparrows, finches, and chickadees! Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was difficult to choose, seeing as part of it occurred while he was still in Honduras.

But the Steller’s Jay is also a year-round (and very noisy) resident of Mexico’s highest forests, and can be found all the way south to Honduras. You might think of the Hairy Woodpecker , Red Crossbill and Pine Siskin as birds of the far northern forests, but they are all residents of our higher coniferous forests as well.

Quetzal is THE beloved, sacred bird of Guatemala and they do live there (and in southern Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) BUT are more accessible in Costa Rica. We watched Acorn Woodpeckers laugh and dive bomb a squirrel. Even the non-birders will love the scenery. Yes, the R. Flame-colored Tanagers are pretty common.

Bill length is given separately for Toucans and Hummingbirds, based on the reasoning that it’s an important identification feature for the first and an important identification feature for the second, but not for kingfishers or woodpeckers. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!)

Sure, I didn’t like it in 2007 when I was doing a (not very) big year in New York and Black-backed Woodpecker would not cooperate for me. I have been in Honduras in winter, when the birds should be there, and never found one. The first, back in 2009, was when I was in Honduras. Ditto for Costa Rica.
