Snow-fronted Geese

There are hordes of fowl here (fowl of the water) in winter, with geese having the most prominent presence. Snow, Ross’s, Greater White-fronted (all pictured above) and Cackling Geese can all be easily seen, very conveniently, at Colusa. A handful of “blue” Snow Geese can be expected as well. Do you see?

The Gas Station Bird

Here’s a quote about bird lungs from Britannica: “Himalayan geese have been observed not only to fly over human climbers struggling to reach the top of Mount Everest, but to honk as they do so.” The bird is a captive-bred Peregrine/Gyrfalcon hybrid owned by people with an Exotic Species Permit.

I want to reach 500 birds in the ABA, get my Queens list to 295, see a total of at least 500 species, and get my World Life List to 1,100. But how did I see so many species this year?

Birding the Battlefields

Before the counts, I was hoping to break 100 species, but after 21 parks reported data back to me we’re up to 183 species! found 36 species, including Killdeer (in December!), I underestimated how much the wide geographic distribution of Civil War-related parks would affect the count totals.
