The Species per Square Mile Approach. While Colombia may have almost 2000 bird species, it is a huge country with, still, complicated long-distance travel logistics. On the other hand, small countries with relatively long bird lists offer higher species densities per square mile. And why 1000?

In southern Trinidad, however, there is much more at play than what is immediately discernible. While the P-a-P Wildfowl Trust’s main thrust is the breeding and release of five duck species, the habitat encourages a number of native wetland birds to inhabit and proliferate the area.

This was actually the place where the late Richard ffrench spent much of his time as a music teacher, amassing countless observations of birds that would later form the basis of one of the essential birding guides for Trinidad and Tobago. About one hundred yards away an Anhinga surfaced with a freshly skewered fish. Giant Cowbird.

A familiar Striated Heron elicited the opposite reaction altogether as they are the default small heron here in Trinidad. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (above), African Fish-Eagle (below). Malachite Kingfisher. Common Sandpiper.

Many of the smaller species of shorebirds (such as the already endangered – technically Near Threatened – Semipalmated Sandpiper ) feed on biofilm and are tremendously susceptible to toxic chemicals. Others feed on small invertebrates and fish – of which there still is a bounty within these drains.

The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. The fishing birds have it easy here. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders.

Several migratory species were around – I’ll touch on these in a subsequent post – but all was quiet and calm nevertheless. Ducks and grebes paddled around, Anhingas swam beneath the surface, occasionally appearing with a skewered fish. But nature continues to emphasize the point that species are not individuals.
