Quantico Has No Compassion for Feral Cats

Critter News

Quantico Military Base is really behaving cruelly when it comes to the feral cats on its base. We do not support or promote feral animals on the base,” flatly stated Bruce Frizzell, head of the Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs office. Frizzell explained that a large population of feral cats is ultimately detrimental to the overall environmental health of the base, its native species and ecosystems. Feral cats may be an animal problem, but there is a human solution.

National Feral Cat Day Didn’t Go As Planned

They have been so successful in suckering cities and other municipalities into believing that they can solve their feral cat problems through Trap-Neuter-Return (T-N-R) that now citizens of those towns have had their eyes (and their noses) opened to what happens when the inmates run the asylum. So on 16 October, which Alley Cat Allies has turned into “National Feral Cat Day,” local governments got an earful.

An Open Letter to Outdoor/Feral Cat Supporters

10,000 Birds

Dear Outdoor Cat Owners/Feral Cat Supporters, Does the photo above sicken you? I have received countless numbers of wild birds mangled and/or killed by outdoor/feral cats, such as the Orange-crowned Warbler pictured here. No: it is the fault of their owners, their former owners, or the Trap-Neuter-Release crowd. Outdoor/feral cat people: are you upset I posted these cat photos? Feral Cats in American Cities

The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. So, maybe, no matter what one’s opinion may be of this idea of feral cat colonies, it can work here. Jourdain questioned whether feral cats is a big enough problem requiring its own ordinance.

City of Albuquerque Being Sued for Trap-Neuter-Release Program

The lawsuit alleges that the City of Albuquerque partnered with animal advocate groups to implement a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program in which stray or feral cats are trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, and then abandoned at the location at which they were trapped.

That Awkward Moment With Feral Cats and Family

10,000 Birds

Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. It started with donation requests for spay and neutering cats but then quickly transferred to a trap, neuter and release organization. On the one hand, it’s better than doing nothing with a feral cat colony. But I don’t agree with the supplemental feeding that happens with feral cats–if you’re gonna call them wildlife, treat them as such.

Um, No.

Shorter Steve Dale : Hey, birders, agree with me that feral cats should be left in the wild where they will kill birds. Oh, and could you volunteer to help maintain feral cat colonies? Trap-Neuter-Release is a failure and leads to misery for cats and death for birds and other wild creatures. See, we can get along! Asides cats

Fix Nation

4 The Love Of Animals

Caring for the homeless cat population in Los Angeles, FixNation , offers free spay and neuter services to caregivers of community cats. FixNation uses Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), which is a community-based program that involves trapping homeless, free-roaming cats, getting them spayed or neutered, and then returning the cats to the exact spot where they were trapped so they can live out the rest of their natural lives.

On Dominance and Animal Birth Control

Animal Person

When taking the issue to simplest common denominator, spaying/neutering is essentially exercising human dominance over non-human animals. But my stance is also categorized under Gray Matters because, in my perfect world, we wouldn't be spaying or neutering anybody. We are a far bigger problem on this planet than the (over)population of feral cats, elephants, Canada geese, or any other creature we "manage" or want to manage, "humanely" or otherwise.

After careful consideration of all of the enlightened arguments that have been made by those in favor of Trap-Neuter-Return for feral cats in recent blog posts , we here at 10,000 Birds have been completely convinced by their well-thought-out, logical, and airtight conclusions. The only issue we really have with the feral cat advocates is that they haven’t taken their arguments far enough.

He wrote a column , not for Audubon, but for the Orlando Sentinal , in which he advocated the killing of feral cats instead of the use of trap-neuter-release. Feral cats kill birds by the billions in the United States and the only real solution to the problem is removal and euthanasia, along with heavy fines for those caught dumping cats.

Yet More Good News for Project Treadstone

Animal Person

Regarding Adam's comment yesterday about low-cost spay/neuter, the reason this particular one is low-cost is that it is subsidized by the county and city (and maybe State, I'm not sure). They have this particular package in rural and urban low-income areas and will allow people to bring ferals from not-so-low-income areas because they're providing a much-needed service to the community. This one's more like Good News for Mary Martin.

They will spay/neuter, vaccinate, tip ears and microchip , and they do not test. Here's the biggest feral cat I've ever seen, who looks like somebody's house cat. What the heck is Pahokee, you ask? If you click on this map , you'll see. It's a city in Florida on our largest lake, Lake Okeechobee. And if you click on a few minus signs to move out, and look all the way east to the ocean and a little bit north you'll see my town: Jupiter. What's in Pahokee you ask?

From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. As for Project Treadstone, after several false starts, trapping, spaying and neutering will resume next week. As many of you know, 2009 was chock full of creature-related drama for me.

February Birding in Tybee Island, Georgia

10,000 Birds

One massively negative aspect of birding Tybee Island is the sheer volume of feral cats and outdoor cats. It is clear that the trap-neuter-release efforts are doomed to failure, as they always are, and I saw three obviously pregnant cats in my short time there. One obvious colony (technically just off of Tybee), where I twice watched people stop to put food out, had not a single cat ear-tipped, making me wonder if there was even an attempt to neuter.

Why Did The National Audubon Society End Their Contract With Ted Williams?

10,000 Birds

On 14 March, 2013, the Orlando Sentinel published an opinion piece by Ted Williams under the headline “Trap, neuter, return programs make feral-cat problem worse.” Then he gave a couple of alternative solutions to the feral cat problem: There are two effective, humane alternatives to the cat hell of TNR. One is Tylenol (the human pain medication) — a completely selective feral-cat poison.

National Justice for Animals Week

Critter News

The mascot for this year’s National Justice for Animals Week is Adam, a spunky black cat who was set on fire by two teenage girls in a vicious attack in Santa Rosa, California, as an eight-week-old feral kitten. From the better late then never category, the ALDF is having a National Justice for Animals Week to raise awareness about animal abuse. They sent me an email on the 21st, but I just got around to reading about it.

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: The real thrust of the American Kennel Club’s opposition to California Assembly Bill 1634 as stated in “ Should Most Pet Owners Be Required to Neuter Their Animals? ” (Editorial Observer, July 30) is not economic but rather that creating a one-size-fits-all law such as mandatory spay and neuter is not a workable, enforceable solution to reduce the diverse demographics of the state’s shelter population.

A feral kitten captured and neutered by a small non-profit, somewhat militant organization, was on display at our local Massachusetts Society Prevention of Cruelty Association branch, which often took these feral cats in the hope of finding homes for them. Make Your Cat an Indoor Cat

10,000 Birds

Almost every single outdoor pet cat, feral cat, or stray kills other animals , no matter how well fed the cat is through other sources. Trap-neuter-release programs sound nice and let folks think that they are doing good but they actually often add to the problem , and never reach the goal of zero feral cats in an area. As anyone who follows this blog knows, outdoor cats are a veritable holocaust for wild birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and even insects.

You’re Not Helping

As most people know cats, both feral and domestic, have a pretty big impact on wild birds and other wildlife, and the effect of mammals is particularly profound in New Zealand. He isn’t arguing against cats kept in the home, and he is right in my mind to blast the SPCA for doing trap neuter release in New Zealand (something I wasn’t aware anyone was stupid enough to think was a good idea here).
