The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. This got me wondering what other cities were doing.

According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service , there are about 10 billion breeding birds in the US. Also, in relatively natural, or wild, lands in much of the US the feral cat population will be limited by a healthy wild predator population. But the US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates between 97 and 976 million a year.

The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. The zoo has a small colony of genuinely wild Grey Herons (watch them compete with the seals for the fish!), Very stupid thing to do. We love them anyway.

Manky Muscovy Ducks

However, the species sometimes referred to as the Barbary Duck appears very much out of place just about everywhere else. Feral Muscovy Ducks seem to attract many of those epithets. Not only are the individual ducks hard to look at, but in groups, the feral populations create the same messes other masses of waterfowl do.

The species he was thrilled to see was the Mute Swan. Well, for me – no, but for Nicolaas, Mute Swans were a lifer species. He has seen them before in Cape Town, but those were introduced and feral birds, while in the Balkans they are indigenous and – countable!

Exploring the Kapela (Chapel) Reserve

Yet, nothing of the calmness of my previous visits remained: a week ago, the reserve was recommended in some angling magazine and I found parked cars and a dozen people, swish-swooshing their fishing rods.
