Guyana had been suffering from an extensive period of drought when we visited, this lack of water ultimately was the primary reason which prevented us from searching for the Harpy Eagle. Another cotinga that is arguably the most popular member of that family – for its voice more so than its looks – is the Screaming Piha.

So while the rest of my family slept in I nipped out to the park this morning to see how the swallows were doing. The video, shot from the driver seat of my car, shows swallows foraging and sitting on the road, a dangerous thing for tired birds to do. They are struggling in the nasty weather.

I like it for its easily recognizable vocalizations which eBird describes as follows: “Raucous, with a diverse repertoire; squawks and chatters loudly, but also whistles tunefully” Frankly, the Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher ( video ) does not look like much – but it is rare at Nanhui and listed as Vulnerable.

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore. I wonder why.

If you want to pretend to combine learning Mandarin and learning about this species, watch this video. The Yellow-bellied Tit suffers a bit less from such jokes. After this longish and completely irrelevant introduction, finally here is a photo of the first bird of September 30th, a Black-winged Cuckoo Shrike. How exciting.
