The fury this meal caused my friends and family back in America motivated me to examine whether eating any animal was justified. A decision not to eat dogs has nothing to do with our inherent hypocrisy, but with our relationship to different animals.

I moved to San Francisco from Minnesota 12 years ago. It was kindled by my grandmother when I was a child but lay dormant until I’d spent enough time in San Francisco to feel at home. Now I’ve moved to Bolinas, just north of San Francisco and water is now big part of my life.

Both Puerto Rico and the USVI have active birding communities that are currently excluded from full membership in the ABA family. All Americans Should be Full Members of the ABA Family. Adding Puerto Rico and the USVI would largely achieve the goal of bringing all Americans into full membership of the ABA family.

I can still recall the thrill of that first morning outside San Francisco, surrounded by new birds. Several, like the mocker and the hummer, were members of families I hadn’t encountered before, either. I saw 42 lifers that day, ranging from Northern Mockingbird to Anna’s Hummingbird. Fantastic!

So you can imagine my great pleasure when it worked out for me to stay in California for two extra days at the end of our family vacation out west. That would be the Northern Gannet that has made the rocky coast near San Francisco its home for the last four years. This Black-footed Albatross made me so happy. This one did too.
