Cladistics is not a way of looking at groups of organisms.

Spider monkeys swung through the highest branches, occasionally letting themselves fall to only a few boughs below, to peer curiously at these poorly adapted bipeds. As these odd cotingas called to each other, a small group of Spix’s Guan rummaged through the high branches of the canopy, running with ease on swaying limbs.

Despite depicting 540 species/56 families, it is a lightweight book of 173 pages, easy to pack and carry. Strictly speaking, Mammals of South Asia is not a field guide, because some larger groups (rodents, bats) cannot be identified down to a species level following the concise descriptions and a single illustration.

It is technically correct, and recently fashionable, to insist that any living animal is a member of the larger group that contains it phylogenetically, i.e., ancestrally, with that group often named after the known animal that roots the tree. So, for example, humans are apes. The point is, of course, that whales are not cows.

These large seedeaters (belonging to the weaver family) are so named for the generally black plumage of the adult male, resembling a widow in mourning. All of the forest in these areas has been cleared many years ago to give way to food production and housing for small towns that continually expand as the local families grow and require more resources for food, housing and employment. We found this little Red-cheeked Woodpecker family surviving on a dead tree near the road to Canande.

Like many of the largest species within bird families, the Great Parrotbill looks somewhat plain, at least in the weather I encountered it. Calls include nasal wheezes, squeals, cackling and churring; combinations of rather high nasal “u-err”, quick high nasal “ii” and rolling “pwaaowa” calls uttered by groups of two or more individuals.
