The Latin species name of the Brown Falcon is berigora , which made me hope it was named for some colorful and potentially sleazy racist naturalist (you may have realized I like these stories, even though I am not a person who slows down when seeing a car crash). Unfortunately, berigora is just an Aboriginal name for this falcon.

My Ten Best Birds of 2021

Then we relocated to a spot where people were seeing several and arrived just in time to see the last one present get snatched by a Peregrine Falcon. It’s a horrible photo but if you squint you may be able to make out the dead Dovekie in the falcon’s talons in this image. A first state record? I wonder if they taste good?

National Geographic Complete Birds of North America, 2nd Edition: A Book Review
