Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. I wish I had read this book. They complement Kricher’s text., Some finches, like Mangrove Finch, have become elusive.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Several Ferruginous Duck and one surprising male Goosander , four Glossy Ibises , Common Kingfishers , Eurasian Hopooes , a high note of a Penduline Tit somewhere from the willows along the canal, Eurasian Spoonbills , European Turtle Doves gently purrring …. The moat would protect the islets and allow the birds to start nesting earlier.

What I have always missed there and what I still miss is to experience presence of the European Beaver. Yet another abundant species in his days was the European Turtle Dove , of which we lost about a quarter of population to hunting in this century alone – nowadays officially a threatened species in the IUCN Red List.

It was an all around quality experience. This remarkable area is best know for its huge wall that was used for centuries to protect the city from invasion, but for me, the Conwy RSPB refuge was fantastic. No luck finding it again, but I was able to add the Cetti’s Warble r, a Turtle Dove, and a pair of Common Cranes.

Today, the camas fields rest protected in the vast bosom of the Clearwater National Forest. There were few places not marked by the camas, except the creek itself and a few small glacial boulders that rose up from the ground like old gray turtles. That was then. But the highlight, of course, was the camas fields.
