This park protects the largest remaining tract of dry deciduous forest in the west of India, offering visitors 37 species of reptiles, 38 species of mammals and, not to be forgotten – almost 300 bird species. The largest reptile is the Indian Mugger Crocodile. Three Indian Jackals are walking through a sunset.

Specifically, rural northwestern Spain, at various points along the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route to the supposed burial place of Saint James the apostle and, before that, to the westernmost point in continental Europe, the supposed End of the Earth, the Finis Terra. Not just birds, but also plants (Colombia boast the most orchid species, too), insects, primates, reptiles. This Chestnut-crowned Antpitta was one of four species we’d see this way. In 2 days of birding we had nearly 170 species, including a great many Colombian endemics. The list goes on and on and on.

Amy, a German shepherd, and Uno, a Labrador retriever, have joined the team at {Frankfurt,} one of Europe's busiest airports — the first two dogs in Germany trained to sniff out live animals, plants or derivatives or remains of them. Incredible that illegal smuggling is estimated at $293 billion. That's huge.

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

That was a wild cat, a wild Wildcat, the cat that lives in the wild because that is where it is from and where it belongs, at the southern end of its pan-African range that extended at one time well into Europe and Asia. And for rodents and reptiles as well. They are invasive species. But they don’t live in North America.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. She has lived in the Middle East and the United States and traveled extensively in Europe. The Olive Sea Snake is the one that varies the most in it’s colouration.
