Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

If you want to know what happened on August 31, 1984, I can name at least one event: In the Padang-Sugihan Wildlife Reserve in South Sumatra province, a Large Frogmouth was mobbed by a Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, as described here. Here is one: when taking photos of elephants, an 800 mm tele lens is not the best equipment.

Officials say the sales have fuelled demand for ivory in Asian countries, especially China, contributing to a sharp increase in elephant poaching. So far this year poachers in Kenya have killed 128 elephants for their ivory; last year 98 were killed. It's a mess.

The two star attractions for most tourists are Asian Elephants and Bornean Orangutans. I dipped on the elephants, but the river certainly delivered for orangutans. Kinabatangan is therefore a popular place, both for tourists in general and for birders specifically. In fact I saw the first two, a female and baby, on the first day.
