Namibia’s 15 key birds

10,000 Birds

Gaining independence in 1990, Namibia is one of Africa’s “newer” nations, although not quite as newborn as South Sudan which has yet to celebrate its first anniversary! Before self-rule it was administered by South Africa and known as South-West Africa. However, Namibia’s colonial history began earlier, in 1884 when it was annexed by the Germans. After a brutal colonization that included genocidal campaigns against the Herero (80% killed) and Nama (50% killed) tribes, the Germans lost control wh

Orphaned Baby Bear Possible Endangered by Early Release into Wild

Critter News

Canadian authorities want to release an orphaned baby bear into the wild at 6 months when mother bears usually push their children out at 18 months. Animal right groups are very angry and fear the baby might die by itself. I can't blame the activists. This decision makes little sense to me.

Tom Regan on Harm to Animals

Animal Ethics

That individuals can be harmed without knowing it has important implications for the proper assessment of the treatment of animals. Modern farms (so-called factory farms), for example, raise animals in unnatural conditions. The animals frequently are crowded together, as in the case of hogs, or kept in isolation, as in the case of veal calves. Since the only environments these animals ever see are the artificial ones in which they live, it sometimes is claimed that they don't know what they are

Controversy brewing over Inca Doves

10,000 Birds

Emotion. Drama. Intrigue. Philosophy. Yes, I’m talking about scientific proposals to ornithological taxonomic authorities. Take, for example, the gem I found in the latest round of proposals to the American Ornithologists’ Union’s North American Classification Committee. The proposal, titled “Change English name of Columbina inca from Inca Dove to Aztec Dove,” begins thus: “I’m serious.” Oh, honey. “[Inca Dove is] a completely misleading, non

Traveling With Your Pets

4 The Love Of Animals

There are few things better than heading out for a road trip with your best friends. Together, you’ll throw away every day cares, giving yourself up to the kind of adventures that can be found only in new places. However, if your best friends just so happen to be a menagerie of pets, there are a few things to consider before revving that engine and heading out the door.

Congratulations and Ululations With an Egyptian wedding at the hotel coinciding with the Eurovision Song contest, I couldn’t resist the sub-title. Apologies to anyone outside Greater Europe, to whom this indulgence probably means nothing at all. My original remit as International Birder of Mystery has rather fallen by the wayside, but it felt as if I had returned to my roots during a trip to Cairo.

White Storks Everywhere

So, yes, it was Spain. Specifically, rural northwestern Spain, at various points along the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route to the supposed burial place of Saint James the apostle and, before that, to the westernmost point in continental Europe, the supposed End of the Earth, the Finis Terra. But don’t worry, I’m not about to get all spiritual on you.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of June 2012)

10,000 Birds

Let me be honest… I have no idea what my best bird of the weekend was. I mean, of course now that the weekend is over, I have a firm grasp of which birds tickled me most over the past few days. But I’m writing this very early in the weekend, while at the airport waiting to jet off to somewhere I may or may not have even shared with readers yet.

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of June 2012?

10,000 Birds

A long list of countries choose to observe Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June, an ideal time to celebrate dads being dads. After all, most fathers celebrate their special day either by doing something outside with their kids or doing something outside without them! I’ll definitely be spending Father’s Day with Mason and Ivy since I’ve just returned from a week of intense birding in Trinidad and Tobago.

How to Bust a BBS

10,000 Birds

For the last two weekends I’ve chosen one day to wake up around five in the morning. Bleary eyed, I pull on a pair some clothes, work my way downstairs and randomly smack my coffee maker until the grinder bursts to life. I then gather my binoculars, my notebook, a travel mug of joe, and the various accoutrements of a day in the field and drive out to an intersection in the rural part of my home county, hoping to arrive at the assigned spot by 5:30.

By The Time You Read This I’ll Be Birding In Hungary!

Yikes! I’m in the land of goulash and, um, Budapest? We Americans, or at least this American, know little about Hungary. But this American did know enough that when Swarovski Optik offered a spot on a week-long trip to Hungary that I couldn’t possibly say no. Daisy, however, could have. After a long, drawn-out negotiating session we managed to strike a deal that involved me going to Hungary for a week and left Daisy smiling wickedly.

Harley the Starley

10,000 Birds

One day my wildlife rehabilitator friend Marilyn brought me a black shoebox decorated with 6 or 8 quarter-sized holes. Energetically sticking his head out, then in, then back out a different hole was a vaguely sinister-looking brown bird, obviously outraged that someone had the nerve to put him in there. “He thinks he’s a cuckoo,” said Marilyn. Harley the Starley was a young European Starling.

Birding Beautiful

It was only around 35 miles but back in the day in the Ford Anglia or the Vauxhall Viva, complete with picnic hamper and rug as well as a wind-break, it felt like it took an age to reach the hills. I distinctly remember the tangible excitement I would feel as we drove north passing through three sleepy villages and turning left at the ‘scout huts’ down the narrow road that would lead us into the Cheviot Hills.

Black-chinned Honeyeaters

10,000 Birds

On the first day of winter, June 1st, I had just seen Grant off to work and I had a lovely surprise. One of our watering points in the garden had a family of Black-chinned Honeyeaters at it. I raced inside to get the binoculars and camera, because from a distance you need to confirm that you have not got White-throated Honeyeaters -especially if they are not being vocal.
