The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. Young raptors like the above Bald Eagle chick are a different matter. If the nest was in a bird house, open the house and check the damage.

Second, every raptor we encountered was identified as Tawny Eagle. The antwren had been elevated to species level and Hilton is just a sucker for anything Paulista, and besides, who needs a reason to go birding? His collection was impressive and overwhelmingly illegal so he will remain unnamed too.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret. It would be nice to be there now.

The scientific species name of the Golden-throated Barbet is franklinii , commemorating Capt. The HBW section on this species’ behavior mostly repeats the phrase “more information needed” Though of course scientists, hungry for grants and topics, say that all the time. Ok, I made that up. The American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) recently filed a lawsuit against the federal government arguing that a planned wind turbine near the famed birding hotspot of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is illegal. There are nesting Bald Eagles in the area as well. And they want their attorneys fees.
