However, the region’s dominant river — the Columbia River — which serves as the border for much of Oregon and Washington, also flows through these rangelands. Part of the mitigation for the McNary Dam was the creation of McNary National Wildlife Refuge. Much of that original habitat has now been lost to agriculture.

The eleven largest national wildlife refuges are also in Alaska, including Arctic NWR and Yukon Delta NWR , each more than 19 million acres.

Most of the estuaries of Puget Sound in Washington State have been developed, but one of the few that remain is the Nisqually River Delta, which was protected as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1974. There’s a $3 day-use fee, but it is free if you have a Duck Stamp.

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. Fish and Wildlife Service cannot effectively restore the lake or other natural hydrology.

I am something of an aficionado of National Wildlife Refuges. The new features are called “ Explore a National Wildlife Refuge ,” and they can be found in the “explore” tab under the “explore a region” sub-tab. As an example, we can use a refuge near me: Ridgefield NWR in Washington. I am also a dutiful eBirder.

Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. This is not to say that there wasn’t a little birding time snuck in here and there.
