Fall Birding at Nisqually NWR

Nisqually NWR is a major staging area for migratory birds , a wintering area for many ducks and geese, and a breeding area for numerous songbirds. There’s a $3 day-use fee, but it is free if you have a Duck Stamp. According to eBird , 278 bird species have been observed and approximately 14,000 checklists have been submitted.

First Post-COVID-19 Birding Trip: Wisconsin and Horicon NWR

And I wanted to be able to fly directly from Portland, so I would not lose a day to travel. In mid-summer, the refuge is full of breeding birds, including Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Pied-billed Grebe, Virginia Rail, Sandhill Crane, Black Tern, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Yellow Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, etc.

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. Like many of the top NWRs for birding , much of Conboy Lake NWR was obtained with funds from the sale of the Federal Duck Stamp : 94.5% of its acreage was purchased with Duck Stamp funds.

Icy Birding along Portland’s Back Cove

We only encountered 10 species in total, but I ticked off 25 Canada Geese , nearly 150 American Black Ducks and Mallards , plus Common Eiders, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Loons , and nearly 50 Bufflehead. We had no idea what we were in for. The car clock had just struck 2 p.m.
