Urban Birding in San Diego

My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon. Riding around Mission Bay and back to the headquarters along the San Diego River can garner us about sixty-five species over the 10-mile bike ride. San Diego has so much to see and do.

Fall Birding at Nisqually NWR

Nisqually NWR is a major staging area for migratory birds , a wintering area for many ducks and geese, and a breeding area for numerous songbirds. According to eBird , 278 bird species have been observed and approximately 14,000 checklists have been submitted. There’s a $3 day-use fee, but it is free if you have a Duck Stamp.

First Post-COVID-19 Birding Trip: Wisconsin and Horicon NWR

And I wanted to be able to fly directly from Portland, so I would not lose a day to travel. On eBird, Horicon NWR has nearly 300 species observed, more than 18,000 checklists, and 13 hotspots. Like many of the best NWRs for birding, Horicon NWR (and most of the WPAs I visited), were purchased with funds from the sale of Duck Stamps.

Summer Birding at Conboy Lake NWR

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. of its acreage was purchased with Duck Stamp funds.

Shearwaters from Shore

Before I moved north to Portland, I lived in San Francisco. Pillar Point provided an easily accessible location to see a variety of shorebirds, scoters, loons, grebes, cormorants, ducks, and gulls, among others. According to eBird, there have been approximately 270 species seen at the hotspot that includes the harbor.
