The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

A marsh littered with garbage will still provide refuge for a bittern, considering in many places most wetlands simply don’t exist any more. What’s better than finding a Tufted Duck? A golf course in the desert can be an oasis of food and shade to a hungry migrant that has been flying all night. I think you get my point.

Cockpit Country is littered with small roads that weave through agricultural areas as well as the main highway — the GPS pointed me in the direction of a newly paved road that became narrower and more pothole ridden as one continued along its length. A Jamaican Owl peers down at me from a tree at Marshall’s Pen.

We noted that the Sobrane Gallery had a lot of leaf litter underneath it. We widened our search, but we kept returning to the leaf litter under the Sobrane Gallery. Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Hardhead, Black Kites, Australian White Ibis and Silver Gulls flew over the bay. There it was!

Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4) 5) White-winged Duck. White-winged Duck is an ugly duck, maybe the ugliest bird I’ve ever encountered. 4) Small Pratincole. Can you find the Small Pratincole? (5) And, scoping. Sometimes snacking.

Then, amazingly, it flopped down in the leaf litter right in front of me where it alternated sunbathing and flipping leaves. Even a later visit with Desi in tow (to give mom a break) was fruitless, though I did increase my year list with the hordes of wintering ducks wintering on the pond. Western Tanager !

I applaud responsibility, but please don’t litter.) Quitting the woods for the Reservoir, I added bright-plumaged Ruddy Ducks and Northern Shovelers , a plethora of Double-crested Cormorants , and a pair of Pied-billed Grebes. C’mon, guys. The latter was the more ambitious plan.
