I started the year in Florida, traveled to India with the ABA in February, combined family and birding in an August trip to California, and in-between saw very good birds in New York and New Jersey. Seeing this giant, awkward yet majestic bird walk through the densely littered landscape was a surreal experience. (4) And, scoping.

Then, amazingly, it flopped down in the leaf litter right in front of me where it alternated sunbathing and flipping leaves. Sadly, though I managed to sneak out of the house while friends and family entertained each other, the goose had flown the coop. What could I do but enjoy the close ducks and try not to freeze?

On a very quiet night during a lull in the drama of the ducks, I was researching the Greyhound racing industry, and seething over its treatment of dogs as well as the support it often gets, through subsidies, to help it survive. And right before my eyes, I discovered that Muscovy ducks eat frogs.
