The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. Both of these are dabbling ducks while the scaups are divers. Checking some of the other ponds revealed more ducks, namely a group of ten Blue-winged Teal and a staggering number of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

Heading out of Ecclesdown Road on the second day of my trip, I had nailed all of my targets save four species ( Caribbean Dove , Yellow-billed Parrot , Jamaican Owl , and Stolid Flycatcher ). Streamertail is a spectacular and abundant endemic species of Jamaica, locally known as the Doctorbird. .

Getting the Year List Started in Queens

Every single species, even the European Starlings above, count as one bird on the year’s checklist. Then, amazingly, it flopped down in the leaf litter right in front of me where it alternated sunbathing and flipping leaves. What could I do but enjoy the close ducks and try not to freeze? I applaud responsibility, but please don’t litter.) Sure, migration was in evidence — both Kinglet species present, Hermit Thrushes everywhere, White-throated Sparrows tuning up their songs in such abundance that they provided an ongoing soundtrack, American Robins and assorted blackbirds on the move. C’mon, guys.

Foster to Fish Creek

Some species I know I will see and other species I don’t observe on every walk. There are a few species that I hear a lot more often than I see and one bird in particular is the Eastern Whipbird. They are usually busy throwing leaf litter around on the forest floor. Fish Creek train station building.
