Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard, was a Ruddy Shelduck! At the Danube in practically downtown Belgrade – how odd is that?

On entering the small village of Alkborough from either West Halton or Burton upon Stather you will see two brown signs on the church stone wall with a duck on, which indicate the area you need to head for. Bird hides have been built and two small car-parks and one of these has wheelchair access to the trails.

As our Gypsy comes to a halt, one Oriental Honey Buzzard is investigating the new arrivals. The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. Finally, the shores of the Telia lie in front of us.

Goanna investigating the drop-off. We heard Black-winged Stilts in the night and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. A goanna wandered into our camp area trying to get to the river for a drink no doubt. It soon realised there was a significant drop-off and wandered off. We choose an area with a good drop-off for a good reason-crocodiles!

Inside the bird hide at Parry’s Lagoon Nature Reserve View from the bird hide There are large numbers of ducks including the Radjah Shelduck, Plumed Whistling Duck and Hardhead. The evidence above shows that there really are crocodiles in the billabong and the ducks are currently at ease with it!

Further along the track I noticed some short pieces of tree branches dropping to the ground and on further investigation there were Sulphur-crested Cockatoos high up in the tree. Waterbirds include Purple Swamphens, Eurasian Coots, Dusky Moorhens, Pacific Black Ducks, Australian Wood Ducks and Chestnut Teal. Long-billed Corella.

We had our first encounter with a Musk Duck in New South Wales here and then continued on to the reserve. An Australian Raven was investigating the area between the forest and the coast and concentrating on something that was not apparent to us! This was particularly useful because it held water and therefore waterbirds!

The male seemed keen to be away from the hole, popping his head out to investigate any noise in the hope that the female might have returned to relieve him of this tiresome shift. The male ducked back inside the hole. He was reluctant to go though as if his sense of duty had trumped his low capacity for responsibility.
