Urban Birding in San Diego

In our early birding days, Erik and I had one of our most hilarious bird-related fights while looking at a flotilla of ducks in Mission Bay yelling at each other about field marks before realizing we were looking at two different ducks. We regularly find Snowy Egrets , scope out Brant , and shorebirds.

This will be a “Wet&# season that all of the wildlife will remember. The low pressure system has already brought Fork-tailed Swifts into view.

Florida, Of Thee I Sing

O beautiful for whistling ducks! Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. a tropical delight! What a sight. Now that’s a jutting jaw.

Birding around Derby

There was a wide variety of birds including Brolga, Black-necked Stork, Royal Spoonbills and a variety of honeyeaters, herons, raptors, ducks, finches and doves to name a few. Thankfully the dam is just before the start of the relentless corrugations of the gravel road and we stopped by to observe the wildlife.

Alkborough Flats

Alkborough Flats were only formed in 2006 when the River Humber burst its banks and flooded 450 hectares of farmland and it is now a haven for wildlife. It had displaced the Common Snipe , but it did not take long and they were back in front of the hide investigating the newly cut reed bed.
