Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. The Australian Painted Snipe nest was positioned on higher ground in between the fence and the highway.

There were plenty of birds on the water to keep me entertained, with close to 60 Greylag geese, 50 Canada Geese, 80 Wigeon, 250 Coots, plus a good assortment of Tufted Ducks, Gadwall, Shoveler and Mallard. I arrived, equipped with my telescope, long before dusk. However, gull numbers were poor: just three Herring Gulls.

There were a lot of birds about at this early hour and we were very surprised to see seven Magpie Geese fly by. After a very dry start to the year there had been no Magpie Geese observed locally at all. Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Hardhead, Black Kites, Australian White Ibis and Silver Gulls flew over the bay.

The more I learn about ducks, the more impressed I am with their blatant promiscuity. Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. But apparently, all the Anas -species ducks are overly amorous or at least indiscriminate.
