A little further, there’s a family group of Savannah Elephants with two two-year olds. Those that crossed the road first are waiting for the rest of the group at the other side. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. Sniffing us.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon.

We soaked in the sight of two male Munias, a few feet from the dog run. This was the best possible place for the quail, and also the spot for what may be one of my favorite birds in the world, White-headed Woodpecker. Just, regular old Acorn Woodpeckers , loud and persistent. a Behr’s Metalmark, Apodemia virgulti.

Yet it was the guy in the kayak, a UM ornithologist, who spotted the Lewis’s Woodpeckers.

Over a dozen distinctive ethnic groups exist here, many of whom live lives little touched by the modern world. The Turmi area is home to the Hamar tribe who numbering nearly 50,000 are one of the largest ethnic groups living in the Lower Omo Valley (with an approximate population of 200,000 tribal people).
