Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe. Well, one reason might be – this animal is not only endangered, but even rarer than the Tiger! We are observing a Dhole , also called Asiatic or Indian Wild Dog. These days, the species shares habitats with Tigers, Snow Leopard, Bears, etc.

As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. Brown-hooded Kingfishers hunt far from water. Spotted Eagle Owls are one of several owls that can be seen here. Crested Barbets come in close. Baobab trees are perfect for sundowners.

You see, up to this point, let’s say 1972, perhaps 1973, I had never really been exposed to a “Threatened, or Endangered” species of any kind. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act.

The species was extinct, a vanished part of the vanishing prairie — and not for the first time. In the 1950s the species was unofficially regarded as extinct by most biologists, a small part lost in the general tumble and disarray of the entire ecosystem they’d inhabited. You couldn’t see it.

They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species.
