Well, one reason might be – this animal is not only endangered, but even rarer than the Tiger! We are observing a Dhole , also called Asiatic or Indian Wild Dog. A hundred metres down the track, several more Dholes await us, totalling eleven dogs.

As well as birds, the reserve holds endangered species like African Wild Dogs. Brown-hooded Kingfishers hunt far from water. Spotted Eagle Owls are one of several owls that can be seen here. Crested Barbets come in close. Baobab trees are perfect for sundowners.

Then, in one of my freshmen science classes, there was a discussion about extinct species, which then lead to the topic of threatened, or endangered species, and what we could do to help out. There is little doubt about the serious nature of the threat to this bird.

They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. Ferruginous Hawks are native to our western short-grass prairies and their diet comprises almost completely of prairie dogs. Well, the ongoing issues of land development, sport shooting, and the rancher’s war on these animals keeps prairie dog populations from ever booming. Not too bad eatin’, huh?
