Despite depicting 540 species/56 families, it is a lightweight book of 173 pages, easy to pack and carry. Most mammal guides aimed at wildlife watchers (and not scientists) tend to cover small and cryptic species as a group only, not going to a species level. It also covers Andaman, Nicobar and Laccadive islands. Highly recommended.

It does fit into a medium backpack (though keep in mind that it’s heavy, almost 3 pounds) and definitely onto the backseat of a car. The authors themselves–Rob Hume, Robert Still, Andy Swash, Hugh Harrop, and David Tipling–collectively have 100s of years of birding and photographic experience.

This past January, however, my experience was even better. And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. It definitely happens.)

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. I was attending the 3rd Global Bird-watching Conference in Gujarat and suddenly surrounded not just be species that were completely new, but entire families of birds.

I have encountered this situation only one time in my birding experience. 2. Size is interesting, but isn’t definitive. 3. Facial characteristics are interesting, but aren’t definitive. 5. Song is interesting, but isn’t definitive. It is not a new book, about 6 years old. But not while flying. Think “white”.

This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding.
