I live in upstate New York where only one of these two species occurs. Perhaps one with a name tag on its breast would help. and the species name will appear. I still prefer to use the field markings as the decider between the species. Wing coloration while sitting will help. But not while flying. Think “white”.

Having never been to Brazil I can’t possibly speak as an expert in terms of what birds are covered or how well species that I have never seen are depicted. The species accounts are written by Robert Ridgely, one of the premiere neotropical ornithologists, and a veteran at writing excellent field guides. Talk about a win-win!

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans.

The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched. Wikimedia Commons Bucerotidae is etymologically opaque to most birders, I’d venture, but when Rafinesque described the family almost two centuries ago, he had kine on his mind. Now if only the Hoatzin had been named for its smell. Get yours today! Wicked, right?

Orlando is so rich in roadside and overhead birds that I kept a list of species seen from the car which ran to 30+ on the first morning and included a Bald Eagle nonchalantly sitting on a street lamp by a Target store. I had to do all three as we headed to Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Wicked, right?

Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another.
