The ibises were initially trained to follow a microlight aircraft over the Alps. Here they were easy to overlook.

The trail wove downhill, around farm buildings demonstrative of the agricultural history of the site before it became protected. We crossed the train tracks that bisected the property, hiking up a staircase to a wooded island with another beautiful marsh overlook.

Our bus ride to the train that would take us to the boat launch led through monoculture pineapple plantations being sprayed with pesticides that were not a pretty sight, but the view of the sun breaking through the clouds over the mountains (like in the picture above) was inspiring. Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!
