Our second week here in Costa Rica has certainly seen a great increase in the amount of rain. He quickly starts pointing our different species that are all around us, with exceptional and obvious knowledge. We were able to get in about 2 hours with Abner the next day, before heading off to the southern end of Costa Rica.

Such bristles, small hairlike feathers around the base of a bird’s beak, are found on most flycatchers as well as a wide range of other species from eagles to nightjars. In this case, it refers to the bird’s lack of rictal bristles. At any rate, the Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet seems to get by fine without them.

I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station in Toronto had an extremely rare and beautiful Townsend’s Warbler x Black-throated Gray Warbler which was banded in April. 2012 was one of my best years for birding in Costa Rica.

In the northern hemisphere, the combination of migrants, resident species, and higher frequency of bird song makes it much easier to identify more birds, compared to say, August, so if you want to get really crazy and go for a Big Day record, spring is the time to go for it. While studying, he also worked on various conservation/research projects (parrots, wagtails, vultures, and anything else that flew) and ringed thousands of birds. Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.
