The accounts aim for specificity and authority; dates and locations of rarity sightings are given, and research articles on nesting and behavior are cited. How could I, the librarian, end up with an outdated field guide?

This content is technical at times, but worth reading for insight into the challenges of conducting a breeding bird survey as well as the material itself.

The majority of wildcats live today in Africa, and virtually none of them have provided the DNA from which supposed histories of domestication have been constructed by researchers. Cats migrate out of the parks and live in areas where the researchers found the cats to be both fatter and less diseased. Plus, Coyotes eat Cats.

What is amazing is that each of these three books is very different in content and tone. How many eggs did a pigeon lay? We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. We have a lot of source material.

This may have been partly a leftover from the Victorian fascination with egg collecting (the infamous passion known as oology), but probably more from people’s burgeoning interest in the nests and eggs found in their gardens and fields, gateway artifacts to a newer hobby called birdwatching. Its organization and content is unorthodox in several ways, which I think is exciting; new approaches to field guides give birders opportunities to rethink how we identify birds and a good excuse to buy yet another field guide. Some offer nest information, egg information, breeding timeline, in flight views, etc.

Indeed, most cuckoo eggs are accepted by the babax ( source ), although a small proportion of hosts reject cuckoo eggs and often boast about this capability when having a few too many drinks. Some Chinese Babax waste part of their lives feeding chicks of Large Hawk Cuckoos, which parasitize the babax species.

Researchers have also learned that the cancer-causing chemicals that form in beef as it cooks also tend to form in chicken. Unfortunately, switching from red meat to chicken does not help very much.
