eBird states that “small white patch on throat is not obvious and difficult to see” And they use a photo that I submitted as main illustration, so they must be right. And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. It just looks stupid. Thank god that this does not apply to humans.

In the right light, a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper can be very beautiful, too. A Great Egret looks fairly majestic … … While a Eurasian Tree-Sparrow does not. A White`s Thrush looks confused, something this species is very good at. A male Siberian Thrush , which has exactly one distinguishing feature.

I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. melli is the Hong Kong form that visits during the winter from southern China. Wicked, right? Note that the lighter markings around the face and throat are undefined and subdued. Or maybe they are quite excited about clarifying that Muscicapa latirostris is the wrong name for this bird while Muscicapa dauurica is right. The Light-vented Bulbul used to be restricted to Southern China but has expanded its range in the past few decades. Apparently, the authors of this paper think so.

A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). I do not have anything interesting to say about the Red-flanked Bluetail right now, but the male is a very beautiful bird.
