Taking the famous statement that Mao was 70% right, 30% wrong (Deng Xiaoping), his decision regarding sparrows certainly falls under the second category. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear.

Start with Eurasian Tree Sparrow , an unlikely high-ranked target for anybody watching birds in Shanghai. Still, a bird that has its moments – and I am always surprised how this sparrow really seems to enjoy human presence, however destructive it may be. It looks fairly flashy in its breeding plumage, much less so in winter.

eBird states that “small white patch on throat is not obvious and difficult to see” And they use a photo that I submitted as main illustration, so they must be right. And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. It just looks stupid. Thank god that this does not apply to humans.

I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. What is a day of birding without scanning malodorous mud, right? Hundreds massing at Mai Po, many coming into breeding plumage. 133 Eurasian Tree Sparrow.

Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. melli is the Hong Kong form that visits during the winter from southern China. Wicked, right? To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue. In the Z.c. cyonotus race.
