But the stars of the month were some breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows. Taking the famous statement that Mao was 70% right, 30% wrong (Deng Xiaoping), his decision regarding sparrows certainly falls under the second category. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear.

Start with Eurasian Tree Sparrow , an unlikely high-ranked target for anybody watching birds in Shanghai. Still, a bird that has its moments – and I am always surprised how this sparrow really seems to enjoy human presence, however destructive it may be. It looks fairly flashy in its breeding plumage, much less so in winter.

China is developing very fast, and Shanghai is developing even faster. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is another bird that is very common in our compound. The Olive-backed Pipit is a small songbird that in Shanghai can only be seen in winter – in summer, it breeds further north. Hopefully, this will not change in the future.

The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! We receive some beautiful photos from China of individually marked shorebirds on migration each year as they travel through the Flyway.

qn Archaeopteryx-like theropod from China Runner-up: The Bald Eagle that swooped around over the Big Gay Race in Minneapolis in October, which I didn’t get a picture of. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.
