eBird states that “small white patch on throat is not obvious and difficult to see” And they use a photo that I submitted as main illustration, so they must be right. And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. It just looks stupid. Thank god that this does not apply to humans.

Or maybe they are quite excited about clarifying that Muscicapa latirostris is the wrong name for this bird while Muscicapa dauurica is right. The Light-vented Bulbul used to be restricted to Southern China but has expanded its range in the past few decades. Apparently, the authors of this paper think so.

Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). Better safe than sorry.
