The largest of the Andean flamingos is native to the wetlands and shallow alkaline lakes of the high Andes mountain range, from southern Perú to northwestern Argentina and northern Chile. Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile.

Ashy Storm-Petrel : Approximately 50% of the world’s Ashy Storm-Petrels breed on Farallones NWR , a group of rocky islands 30 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. A handful of Hawaiian Petrel chicks were recently translocated to Kilauea Point NWR on Kauai. Channel Islands NP , also in California, supports most of the other 50%.

Suddenly in the middle of the soybean fields there was a group of Lesser Rheas that were approaching the road. We stopped and observed this first group of adult Rheas that seemed quite comfortable with us and the road traffic. Moments later we spotted a second group of 20 adult and young Rheas running across the field.

Shorebirds appeared in posts by folks from Peru, Chile and Argentina not from folks from Central America. Some of these birds were being already banded as part of long term studies. The Common Gallinule , is the most wide spread of all the members of the rail family, being found from Canada, to Chile, Europe, Asia, Africa, much of the Pacific, and the Galapagos Islands. Very much omnivorous, they consume plant life, spiders, works, frogs, well, pretty much anything that you might find in a reedy, swampy area.
