The largest of the Andean flamingos is native to the wetlands and shallow alkaline lakes of the high Andes mountain range, from southern Perú to northwestern Argentina and northern Chile. Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile.

Ashy Storm-Petrel : Approximately 50% of the world’s Ashy Storm-Petrels breed on Farallones NWR , a group of rocky islands 30 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Further west, other sanctuaries include additional protected waters, including the enormous 580,000 square mile Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.
