In the Spring, the reserve is alive with nesting Redshanks , Skylarks , and displaying Lapwings , while Marsh Harriers cruise the reed beds looking for food for their young, and Brown Hares raise their young safe from men with dogs. It is a windy place at the best of times.

Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Many have been shot since the project started, despite a great deal of publicity raising awareness of the birds. Here they were easy to overlook.

Mating pairs are faithful for life and share the tasks of raising the young. In the case of the acuri, the birds usually eat those kernels that have already fallen to the ground or that have been ruminated by cattle or wild animals, but they eat bocaiuva nuts straight off the bunches hanging from the trees.

Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. Smith Oaks is a migratory bird sanctuary owned and maintained by Houston Audubon, and the Rookery is a year-round bonus, full of Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Neotropical Cormorants, Anhingas, Tricolored Herons and Black-crowned Night-Herons.

Bea directed me to an interview with Dr. Elizabeth Parker , the "chair man " (my emphasis) of the Animal Agriculture Alliance at CattleNetwork, which apparently is "The Source for Cattle News." The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting ! The Humane Society of the United States is the big bully on this strange playground. We live our issues.
