Tri-colored Egret or Snowy Heron?

10,000 Birds

Suspected hybrids between heron species, whilst extremely rare, have been documented for some time. A Little Blue Heron/Tri-colored Heron hybrid was reported from Arizona in 1964 and a Little Blue Heron/Cattle Egret suspect was reported from California in 1989.

I’m only supposed to document one specific species, but I also note the other birds because in a 4 hour period, I’m lucky if I see the target species for 15 minutes. Cattle wandered this pasture along with me (one cow even attempted to taste my carbon fiber tripod). It’s a good strategy for Bobolinks to have.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.

I can also note my first White-fronted Nunbird , I had a few at Tirimbina Reserve just the other day. . Snowy Egret – Egretta thula; Tirimbina, 9-Jan.

The population of parrotlets they studied was located on one of the many huge hatos (cattle ranches) in the Venezuelan llanos, a vast swath of flat flooded savannah in the central third of the country that drains into the Rio Orinoco. I present here an annotated collection of photos documenting the entry of new parrotlets into this world.
