The researchers are quite aware of the differences between humans and birds and thus have completely ignored another explanation for this behavior. It is sometimes necessary to find food though.

The population of parrotlets they studied was located on one of the many huge hatos (cattle ranches) in the Venezuelan llanos, a vast swath of flat flooded savannah in the central third of the country that drains into the Rio Orinoco. These threats are further exacerbated by the naturally low reproductive rates of these cavity-nesting birds.

The New Jersey Bird Records Committee (NJBRC) documents 465 species of natural origin. That Cattle Egret I found in Somerset County, August 2009? Of course, these are stories of over 460 species, condensed and informed by research gleaned from ornithological literature dating back to 1869. No wonder people were excited by it.)
