I come from a large family: five sisters, two brothers and almost everyone has kids. Most of my family lives in Indiana, but thanks to social media we can easily keep in touch. Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. I have mixed feelings about TNR.

The eggs hatched out around 20th June after 28 days of incubation and the Pied Oystercatcher family were soon on the move. This moves the family closer to a reef that gets exposed on low tides and better feeding opportunities. Usually the first thing we look for when we visit Pied Oystercatcher families is look for footprints.

Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Now, he lay frightened and ruffled in my hands, his tail tattered, his feathers damp from the maw of a cat named Puck. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. It’s tribal and familial.

The eggs usually hatch out quite close together and then the family can all move away from the nest site. There are dangers around the nest site and the sooner they could move the family away from the exposed nest site the better. Feral cats are also a problem in Broome. The remaining egg still needed to be incubated.

The week of President’s Day this year found me, my family, and some close friends spending a week in a beach house on Tybee Island, a low-lying, barrier island just east of Savannah. One massively negative aspect of birding Tybee Island is the sheer volume of feral cats and outdoor cats. They are everywhere!

We have to understand, though, that this was a natural predator and not one of our introduced feral cats or foxes. Over the next few days we expect the Pied Oystercatcher family to make the trek two kilometres down the beach to Gantheaume Point. The moist Pied Oystercatcher nest site after the thieving.

Over the two weeks since I first introduced you to this family of Pied Oystercatchers there has been a lot of walking. This family of Pied Oystercatchers have not only walked in and out with the tides, which are big in Broome, but also moved about two kilometres north. Pied Oystercatcher family.
