This little Male Costa’s Hummingbird took shelter in a potted bougainvillea, on the patio of a nearby condo. This was my first California Towhee in well over a year. This Black-crowned Night Heron , whom I had nicknamed Newton, snuggled up against the lee side of the head wall. He was actually dry and out of the wind all night.

The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. On my last couple of visits, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, Ruddy Ducks, Common Gallinule, Western Grebe, Eared Grebe and Pied-billed Grebes were on the water.

I do not have a life list for those birds I saw in my youth, 45 years ago, in California. But the Kentish Plover was sheltering its young under its body, and the Little Ringed Plover was incubating an egg — right in the middle of downtown Madrid! And Oystercatchers are very amusing birds.

We encountered a vicious storm, that convinced us the take a break, find some shelter, and head into Eureka, California. We had been at sea for 5 days and 5 nights, over 100 miles off shore, sailing non-stop from the USA-Canada border to San Francisco.
