Rarer than Tigers: the Indian Wild Dog

10,000 Birds

Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. I am curious to see whatever awaits us in the Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road.

Birding Villahermosa’s Urban Parks

10,000 Birds

Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. As we gazed upwards at those backlit migratory warblers, I noticed a Bare-throated Tiger-Heron … nesting! Then, around 4:00 p.m., And yet, there it was.

Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 2

10,000 Birds

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

Birding Nanhui, Shanghai, in September 2021

10,000 Birds

Then, I was not sure whether this was the right thing to do. Some other members of the shrike family were a bit less testosterone-driven at Nanhui – like this Bull-headed Shrike … … this rather attractive-looking Tiger Shrike … … or one of the many Brown Shrikes passing through Nanhui on migration.

Birding Shanghai in September 2022

10,000 Birds

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine). This is not really an option at Nanhui though.
