An entire weekend’s birding in April, the start of spring migration for the wood-warblers, with no new wood-warblers checked off my year list.

” The fact that they are monogamous and pair up by November, 4 to 5 months before breeding, probably endears them to some. The Yellow-throated Warbler is a wood-warbler that breeds almost exclusively in the southeastern United States. In New York City we get them as migratory overshoots though they do stick around and attempt to find a mate on occasion (and there has been documented breeding of the species in the state).

I am used to seeing young Gadwall at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, sometimes under less-than-ideal circumstances , but I rarely get a chance to see an entire brood of ducklings close enough to get some pictures. Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia. Red Knot in non-breeding plumage.

This cruel, cruel fate we endure in western New York torments man and beast alike. Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend.
